Russian Literature Book Club: The Bizarre and the Mysterious in St. Petersburg

An in-person book discussion with Anastasia Shteinert at the Russian History Museum

Curious things are happening in St. Petersburg. One morning, a barber wakes to discover that his nose has embarked on its very own social climb. On another day, an artist purchases a cursed portrait that alters his life forever.

Guided by Anastasia Shteinert, we’ll wander the streets of 19th‑century St. Petersburg through two of Nikolai Gogol’s famous stories, “The Portrait” (required reading) and “The Nose” (recommended reading). Along the way, we’ll unpack the hallmarks of city prose: myth, the absurd, social satire, and more, all through the voice of one of Russia’s greatest writers.

We will start with a short lecture that will provide basic insights into Gogol and his time, followed by a discussion where everyone is welcome to share their thoughts and impressions.

Whether you’re drawn to uncanny encounters or razor‑sharp social commentary, you’re in for rich insights and a delightful time!

Tea and Russian sweets will be served.

Recommended for ages 16 and up.

This program is FREE, with a suggested donation of $10 per attendee.
