In Memory of Archbishop Peter (Loukianoff)

November 8th, 2024Announcements

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Archbishop Peter (Loukianoff) of Chicago and Mid-America, a member of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad, on November 8. He played a vital role in establishing the Russian History Museum, leading to its official opening in 1984.

Born in San Francisco, Paul Loukianoff (Pavel Andreyevich) began his theological studies at Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary in Jordanville, graduating with the class of 1971. He continued his education at Norwich University in Vermont and the Theological Faculty of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Belgrade. Upon returning to Jordanville, he taught at the seminary and served as the Dean of Students (inspektor), was tonsured a monk and ordained there.

As the museum’s first director, Archbishop Peter significantly contributed to building and cataloging the collection of what was then called the Russian Museum and Archive, and organized the museum’s inaugural exhibition in 1984. His dedication to collecting and preserving Russian history and heritage has left a lasting impact.

We extend our sincere condolences to his family, the faithful of his diocese, friends, and all who were touched by his life and work.
